10 Things You Didn’t Know About… Kenzo

Hey there,

I think you all heard that, after Balmain, H&M announced a new collaboration with Kenzo.  It is thus the perfect occasion to know more about this brand.

  1.  The brand was founded by Kenzo Takada – not to be confused with Takeda, the character of Revenge (I’ve only started watching the show, so NO spoiler 😀 ) – in 1970.  The designer was born and raised in Japan, and arrived in Paris around 1965 to study… fashion (what else?!).  1970 is the year of Takada’s first runway show in Galerie Vivienne and of the opening of his first shop, “The Jungle Jap” [1].
  2. He graduated from Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo.  Other prestigious alumni include: Hiroko Koshino, Yohji Yamamoto and Chisato Tsumori [2].
  3. Since 1993, Kenzo has been one of LVMHs 70 Houses.  “Kenzo Takada” had to become a registered trademark, so that Kenzo could still sell his own collections [3].
  4. Takada retired in 1999.  His last show took place in the Zenith in Paris in front of 4000 people [4].  Five years later, he came back as a decoration designer and launched a new concept “Gokan Kobo” (the Five Senses Workshop) [5].
  5. In 1994, Kenzo Takada decorated the Pont Neuf in Paris with flowers.  The Japanese designer wanted to celebrate the first day of summer, and placed 32.000 flowerpot (begonias).  Kenzo’s gift to the Parisians required 3 days [6].

  6. Antonio Marras was named artistic director of womenswear in 2003 [7], followed by the duo Carol Lim and Humberto Leon in 2011.  The latter are also the designers of “Opening Ceremony“; and the former had his own brand too, all the while working as artistic director at Kenzo. [5, 7]
  7. H&M is not the first brand with which Kenzo collaborates.  Kenzo had a surprising collaboration with Vans.  The duo launched 5 capsule collections [8, 9].

  8. Kenzo’s it-bag is the “Kalifornia“, designed by Carol Lim and Humberto Leon [10].

  9. Fans of the fashion brand include: Selena Gomez, Jessica Alba, Michelle Obama, Rihanna, and Zendaya [11].

  10. Kenzo Takada is the Honorary President of the Asian Couture Federation [12].

Hope you learned a few things 😉 If you want me to know more about another designer/brand or anything else, let me know 🙂
